What is a Socratic Seminar?
A Socratic Seminar is a student-focused activity that emphasizes speaking skills and question asking. Socratic Seminars are named for the Greek Philosopher Socrates, who believed in the power of asking questions and discussing ideas.
Students will read a short piece, highlight text, and answer short essay questions. Then they will circle up for discussion. The discussion will cover the piece and how it relates to students' lives.
Why do Socratic Seminars?
Socratic Seminars will help you in three ways:
1. You'll become a better reader by identifying main ideas, supporting details, and unfamiliar words/ideas.
2. You'll become a better speaker by sharing your opinions with your classmates.
3. You'll become a better critical thinker by asking questions and answering others' questions.
Expectations
There are only three expectations for Socratic Seminars:
1. Listen attentively when your teacher or classmates are speaking.
2. Only one person can speak at a time.
3. Contribute two useful comments or questions to the discussion
